Orphaned as a child and sent to live with his aunt and uncle, Peter grew up a polite, hyper-intelligent, but shy boy, who was not a popular guy in school. The son of a science genius, himself a science genius, Peter was something of a nerdy misfit who didn't fit in for most of his life. He had low self-esteem, no real friends, but despite his outcast status, he generally came off to adults as a polite young man who had himself together. Things began to change for Peter when he was bitten by a radioactive spider, which imbued him with the proportionate strength, speed, stamina, and abilities of an arachnid. He began to gain more confidence, but all in all, things didn't change too much for him. When Peter makes the poor decision not to intervene in a crime he could have stopped which later results in the death of his Uncle Ben, Peter was shattered, blaming himself for the death. Using his new abilities, Peter decided to become a superhero, both to inflict punishment on himself for his failings, and to make amends for the terrible wrong he had perpetrated. In addition, he took a very strong role in his aunt's life, looking after her as much as she looked after him. Peter has often taken great risks to protect her, even sacrificing his most precious commodities to do so. After graduating High School, Peter went on to Empire State University (ESU) where he would earn a Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) in Chemistry. He would later use this to get a job as a high school science teacher. Mostly though, Peter has retained some variation of the same job he had in his own high school years - working as a photographer for the Daily Bugle. At least, until recently, when he was hired as a research scientist for Horizon Labs. Peter's first serious relationship was with the beautiful Gwen Stacey. Although he's dated other women off and on, the love of his life is, and has been since he was eight years old, his childhood next door neighbor, Mary Jane Watson. In love with her for many years, Peter's interest in her was thwarted several times, first by his best friend Harry's relationship with her, then again when she was engaged to John Jameson. But the two finally started dating when Peter was 21, and a few years later, they became engaged. When his work as Spider-man made him late to his own wedding though, the wedding was called off, as was the engagement, and the two parted. MJ moved to Los Angeles to pursue her acting career and Peter eventually moved on, too. In the last two years, he's gotten a prestigious job as one of seven top scientists at Horizon Labs, and started a relationship with Carlie Cooper, which recently ended in her tragic murder at the hands of the Green Goblin.
